Born in Alexandria in 1892, Sayyid Darwish is highly regarded as the father of modern Arabic Music. Coming from humble beginnings, he began performing by reciting the Quran after attending Al Azhar. He was later recruited by the Syrian Attalah Brothers who discovered him playing music for some people and hired him on the spot. After some years on the road in Syria, he returned to Egypt at the beginning of WWI, where he gained limited recognition performing 19th Century classics in cafes. However, it wasn’t until he began his career in the operatic theaters of Cairo that his music was heard by the masses. Inspired by the Egyptian Revolution of 1919, his unique style of utilizing the vernacular and current political events as the back drop of his compositions attracted many local artists, musicians, and actors thus propelling him into the limelight. He is also credited with creating a fusion that blended western instruments with classical Arabic rhythmic and melodic structures to give birth to a new era for Arabic Music. Although Sayyid Darwish passed away at the young age of 31 ( in 1923), his unique ability to combine the emotion of the lyrics and the music still inspires musicians throughout the world today.
سيد درويش موسيقى مصرى، من مواليد 1892 باﻹسكندرية. يعد واحد من أهم الموسيقيين العرب على مدار التاريخ، فهو مجدد الموسيقى العربية، ولد درويش لأسرة متوسطة الحال، التحق وهو في الخامسة من عمره بأحد الكتاتيب ليتلقى العلم ويحفظ القرآن، وبعد وفاة والده وهو في السابعة من عمره، قامت والدته بإلحاقه بأحد المدارس، وهنا بدأت تتضح موهبة درويش الفنية من خلال مدرسته وحصة الموسيقى باﻷخص، قبل الإشتغال بالفن عمل درويش كعامل بناء، وقد لعبت الصدفة دورها فى حياته عندما سمعه الأخوين أمين وسليم عطا الله وهما من أشهر المشتغليين بالفن فى ذلك الوقت، وقررا أن يصحباه برفقتهم فى رحلتهم الفنية إلى الشام عام 1908، وهناك تعرف على الشاعر الملا عثمان الموصلي، الذى إعجب بموهبة درويش الفنية الكبيرة وقرر أن يرعاه فنيا، فحفظه التواشيح وعلمه الكثير من علمه، بعدها عاد درويش إلى القاهرة وظل فترة من الزمن يتنقل بين عمل وأخر حتى تعاقد معه الأخوين عطا الله، وأصبح فردا من فرقتهم الموسيقية بعدها سافر مرة أخرى إلى الشام وكانت هذه هى نقطة اﻷنطلاق الحقيقية فى مسيرة درويش الفنية. وكانت أول ألحانه التى قام بتأليفها “يا فؤادي ليه بتعشق”. ومن بعدها إنتقل إلى القاهرة وهناك لمع نجمه أكثر و زادت شهرته بعد أن قام بتلحين كافة روايات الفرق المسرحية في شارع عماد الدين أمثال فرقة “نجيب الريحاني”، “جورج أبيض” و”علي الكسار”. تنوعت ألحان درويش و أختلفت مقاماتها و قوالبها وقد كان هذا سبب تميزه وتفرده، ويعد درويش من اوائل الفنانين الذين ربطوا الفن بالسياسة والحياة اﻷجتماعية فنجده غنى فى مناسبات عديدة مثل أغنية “قوم يامصرى” التى غناها أثناء ثورة 1919، أيضا نشيد “بلادى بلادى” الذى اقتبس فيه بعضا من كلمات الزعيم الراحل مصطفى كامل، و أغنية “الحلوة دى” التى غناها تضامنا مع الحرفيين والفئات العاملة بالمجتمع، فقد كان هدف الموسيقى المصرية قبل درويش الطرب فقط، ولكن سيد درويش جعل منها مهنة أكبر وأهم، فقد أستخدمها في الجهاد الوطني والإصلاح الاجتماعي.
توفى سيد درويش فى سبتمبر 1923، وهو فى ريعان شبابه، لكنه كان قد ترك وراءه كنز وتراث فنى عريق، مازالت تفخر به اﻷجيال حتى الأن.
