Dear Friend of Zawaya and Aswat,
In response to the alarming divisiveness in our country today, Zawaya stepped up its Aswat performances this year by reaching out to more diverse audiences and by collaborating and standing in solidarity with interfaith and multicultural art groups. From Santa Cruz in the south all the way to Alameda and Contra Costa counties in the east, Zawaya produced many performances giving voice to immigrants, refugees, asylees, DACA, and minority communities through song.
Zawaya is dedicated not only to bringing the joy of the Arab arts to our local community but also to supporting the global community. In June, Zawaya produced an all-volunteer concert that raised well over $20,000 for music education, including the purchase of instruments and hiring teachers, for Palestinian refugee youth in the Burj el-Shimali and Rashidiyyah refugee camps in southern Lebanon.
In 2019, Aswat will also welcome its first very own female director, Basma Edrees. Basma hails from Egypt and is a graduate of Juilliard, specializing in violin. She will conduct the Aswat Women Ensemble and the April 27, 2019 concert featuring music from Sudan and Nubia.
Zawaya could not exist without your support. We are therefore delighted to present to you the Aswat 2019 performance season and to extend priority participation to you. In the summer of 2019, as Zawaya approaches its 20th anniversary, Aswat will give three private summer garden dinner performances. Tickets will be $100 each and admission will be limited to only 100 attendees per event. These concerts will be held in private homes of Zawaya patrons.
Tickets for the 2019 ASWAT concerts are exclusively offered in advance to those willing to provide support at the following levels:
