Workshop Title: Oud & Maqam
This workshop is geared towards those who are able to read notes, and already know how to play a plucked string instrument (such as a guitar).  You will be gaining exposure to four maqaamaat,, all of which have Arab quarter tones and a sama’i.  You will be provided with sheet music and a USB drive with two recordings of the sama’i that you can practice along to.  Youth are welcome, but need to be advanced musicians.

About the Instructor:  Dr. James Samir Ismail was born in California to parents from a small coastal village ofSyria.  Samir attended the University of California at Santa Barbara where he completed both his undergraduate and graduate studies in Mechanical Engineering majoring in Control Theory. Along the way, he has immersed himself in strengthening Arab and Middle Eastern cultural ties with America, primarily by presenting the rich musical traditions of his heritage through oud performance. Recently, Samir deepened his knowledge of Arab music by learning the art of oud construction. He is the principal and oud instructor for Zawaya’s Aswat Youth program.  He currently works as a Senior Engineer at Apple.
