Aswat Ensemble begins its Fall 2017 Season!
Please join us at our Open Registration!
We practice each Sunday throughout the season.
Join us in this CELEBRATION of diversity, acceptance and inclusion, as we gather to show the world that we will not accept any form of hate in our country.
WHY: Not even a week into his presidency, Donald Trump began making good on his campaign promise of “a total and complete shutdown of Muslims entering the United States” by instituting his Muslim Ban, starting with seven Muslim-majority countries. After the executive order was successfully challenged in courts across the country, its fate now lies in the hands of the Supreme Court of the United States.
On October 10th, SCOTUS will hear oral arguments in the Muslim Ban case. This is an important moment—win or lose—that will set a major legal, political, and moral precedent. We believe it is critical that there be a strong, loud, mass mobilization outside the Supreme Court that sends a message to the Justices and to this Administration: Muslim communities are organized, and our allies have our backs.
We WILL NOT be silent and WE WILL stand up for our communities in the face of any and all discriminatory policies.
WHAT: ASWAT Bay Area Arabic Music Ensemble, speakers from the 6 impacted countries, refugees, and allies will speak, read poetry and sing in solidarity.
HOW: Bring your friends and family and join Asian Americans Advancing Justice – Asian Law Caucus, Black Alliance for Just Immigration, CAIR – San Francisco Bay Area, and NIAC on the steps of San Francisco’s City Hall on October 9th, the day before the oral arguments, where we will come together as a community and hear from those most impacted by the Muslim Ban.

With the current political atmosphere, rising xenophobia, the Muslim Ban, and the repealing of DACA, we at Zawaya feel that fostering solidarity between the Bay Area’s diverse communities is now more important than ever. For this reason, we have reached out to our good friends Vukani Mawethu and San Jose Taiko as well as our new collaborator La Peña Community Chorus to plan a multicultural inter-community concert celebrating Immigrants, Refugees, and Dreamers. This concert will be free and take place at the ICCNC on January 27th, 2018.

Aswat Women Ensemble performs its first public concert featuring the greatest songs originally performed by the Arab World’s most beloved female singers. Each song portrays one of the many faces of love we encounter during our lives: love for a significant other, love for one’s country, love for God, and a loving nostalgia for moments passed.
