Dear Friend,

Zawaya contributes to the American multicultural discourse with the Arab and Islamic Arts, serving to enrich the American cultural landscape, the American imagination, and American life.  Every dollar that you contribute enables Zawaya to present Arab and Islamic artforms in the American milieu – artforms that have played a part in inspiring great American artistic accomplishments.  Consider, for instance, the Arab-Islamic roots of the Blues – a genre that was born in America but undeniably inspired by Arab and Islamic heritage.

With Zawaya’s Arab music program held under the auspices of the Aswat Ensemble, the Aswat Women’s Ensemble, the Aswat Oud Ensemble, and Aswat Youth, residents of the SF Bay Area are granted access not only to live authentic classical, folkoric, and contemporary Arab music, they are also able to avail of music instruction and training in Arab music and methodology at little to no cost.  On top of that, Zawaya provides a platform for developing and professional artists alike – enabling them to participate in musical events and projects – and brings artists of diverse racial/ethnic and religious/non-religious backgrounds together over Arab music in a safe space.

Zawaya also brings the Islamic arts to life in America through hands-on arts and crafts workshops, film screenings, and music performance.  In a pioneering project this year, Zawaya launched the Doorway to Islamic Civilization event that gave Bay Area residents access to lessons in the different styles of Arabic calligraphy, Islamic design, sacred Islamic music, and more – drawing the American experience of Islamic civilization away from its hollow, demonized version towards a genuine, more nuanced one.

On behalf of the board members, staff, member artists, and volunteers of Zawaya who are working with a bare-bones budget to fulfill Zawaya’s mission, I would like to express my sincere hope that you see the value and importance not only of our work in bringing the Arab and Islamic arts to the lives of Bay Area residents, but also of the Arab and Islamic arts itself in American society and in human civilization.  And since Zawaya espouses pluralism and inclusion, we recognize the value and importance of the contributions of other communities and cultures as well.

Help Zawaya contribute to American inspiration with the Arab and Islamic arts.  Donate today.

Sincerely,

Nabila Mango

Executive Director
